Courtesy Resolution Honoring Berryman

The Center for the Theology of Childhood has been leading a growing movement to invite dioceses, synods, universities, and other organizations to honor the life and work of Dr. Jerome W. Berryman through the adoption of a Courtesy Resolution. These resolutions formally recognize Dr. Berryman’s groundbreaking contributions to the spiritual formation of children and his development of Godly Play, which continues to shape Christian education across traditions.

In the fall of 2025, both the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts passed such resolutions, joining a widening community that seeks to celebrate and preserve Dr. Berryman’s legacy. The Massachusetts resolution was accompanied by a thoughtful and moving presentation, now available as a recorded resource for others considering similar action.

Organizations interested in sponsoring a resolution of their own—whether as part of a diocesan convention, synod gathering, university body, or other ecclesial or educational assembly—are warmly invited to be in touch. The Center is eager to support additional partners in recognizing Dr. Berryman’s work and expanding awareness of the theology of childhood.
