About the Archives

The Berryman Archive encompasses the full body of work created and collected by Jerome W. Berryman throughout his lifetime. This extensive collection includes draft manuscripts, personal and professional correspondence, original poems, sermons, and materials documenting the development of Godly Play—the innovative approach to religious education pioneered by Dr. Berryman.

In addition to written materials, the archive features a rich assortment of photographs, video recordings, lecture notes, handouts, and other resources that trace the evolution of Berryman’s thought and practice over decades of work.

The Center for the Theology of Childhood, founded by Dr. Berryman, maintains the digital collection of these materials here (see below), ensuring ongoing access for researchers, educators, and practitioners.

The paper archives are preserved at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, which also houses the Berryman Special Collection—a curated library of approximately 600 volumes from his personal collectionreflecting his wide-ranging intellectual and theological interests. Virginia Seminary welcomes visitors to its campus to spend time with the Special Collection or view the documents housed in the archive. Contact the Office of Lifelong Learning to arrange for a visit. The contact person is Wallace Benton, wbenton@vts.edu.
